Cars for Scotty and DJ

Well, you won't believe what happened to Scotty in August! Actually, I heard about it in April, but Scotty was kept in the dark till the actual presentation in August.

When Ronnie McDowell was at Scotty's studio recording his new Curb Records album "The E Connection", he and I were in the kitchen talking (I was the cook, he was the star...they did not need us in the control room). He said that he was mad that even though Elvis gave away around 200 cars in his career, he never gave one to Scotty or DJ, even though Scotty's wife's car was the one they got started on the career driving. So for the 50th anniversary of the recording of "That's Alright, Mama", he (Ronnie) was giving them a car!  I thought it was a great big ol' ambition, but he REALLY MEANT IT!

For the next four months, he wore out his cellphone calling fans, other performers, friends of Scotty, friends of DJ, friends of his, and just about any number he could get hold of....I was beginning to think he was just going through the phone book!

But he made his goal! On August 6, 2004 at the Bluesville Club at the Horseshoe Casino, he presented Scotty with a brand new 2004 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer and DJ with a brand new 2004 Cadillac deVille. Can you believe that? As you can tell from some of the pictures, Scotty could not believe it! I especially love the one where he is saying, "ME????" You can tell which one that is.

As you can see in the pictures, even Mike Curb, Ronnie McDowell's record label owner was present for this day! That's a rarity, ask anyone in the Nashville music industry. And of course our old friend George Klein was the MC for the show. The crowd was great, the show was great, and the car is fantastic (see its picture if you don't believe me).

Also on the same night, we had some great guests in the house. Billy Swan, a friend of Scotty's since Music City Recorders days, and a friend of mine since 1974, was there. He came up on stage and did a couple of songs, and then we also got to hear Steve Cropper do "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay", which he wrote. Then Steve did something so neat! He gave Scotty a gold record for mastering "Green Onions" which was Booker T. and the MG's huge hit Steve was the fantastic guitar player in the MG's and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for that. What this means is that now Scotty has gold records for performing (He was finally given a gold record for "That's Alright Mama" 50 years after it was Recorded), a gold record for producing "Tragedy" by Thomas Wayne in 1959, a gold record for engineering "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine in the late 70's, and now his mastering gold record for "Green Onions". I don't know if there is anyone else in the entire record industry with million sellers for FOUR DIFFERENT jobs on records.

Thanks, Ronnie, fans, friends, industry people and everyone who had anything at all with this beautiful gift and this tribute to Scotty. We're working on a list to try to send Thank-you notes to each person, but if we don't get a name and address to each and every one, please take this note and these pictures as the biggest "Thank you!" Scotty has ever said!

Love, Gail
